What Do The Duties Of A Clinical Pharmacist Entail?

Often, when consumers, or people, are asked to think about a pharmacist, they will think of a professional working in a retail environment. This, as connotations of retail pharmacies and drugstores, and therefore, it is fair to say, the generally speaking, people see pharmacists working in pharmacies. However, there is a side to pharmacists, as a profession, but entails work in a clinical and hospital sense too.

A clinical pharmacist is a pharmacist that works within a clinic, the hospital. This may seem quite different to what a retail environment may entail. For example, when going into retail pharmacy, it is clear that pharmacists normally diagnose and provide solutions for consumers with health problems, often on the high Street. However, in a hospital or health clinic, it is clear that a registered doctor or health professional may often provide such diagnosis and prescription. However, in such a busy environment, it's clear that there is at least some kind of role available to clinical pharmacists.

In fact, in the United States, even though there is a majority of pharmacists who work in retail, there is still a very large proportion of pharmacist that work in a clinical sense. This need the clinical pharmacists is therefore illustrated within the health system of the United States. Clinical pharmacists not only provide prescriptions in such a clinical sense, but they also liaise and work with doctors and other health professionals to organize the prescription of, and application of, medical drugs and medicine.

pharmacist education

Often, when a patient requires different types of medicine, most normally combinations, a pharmacist may be enlisted, perhaps from in-house, to help with such an issue. Doctors often have the knowledge of pharmacists, however, it is often a much more general knowledge. Therefore, with the specific knowledge that a pharmacist can provide in such a large organization as a health clinic or hospital, it is clear that they have a vital role in ensuring that all of the medication is administered carefully.

Clinical pharmacists also receive assistance from technicians and assistant pharmacist workers. Pharmacy technicians often help in a clinical role as well as a regional role too. It is often not the same as retail environment, the pharmacy technicians either, however, they do support everything the pharmacist will do, and will often take on smaller tasks that the pharmacist is unable to complete.

Now the importance of a clinical pharmacist has been established, it may prove interesting to look at the type of education and training required in order to become a clinical pharmacist. Even though the jobs of retail and the clinical pharmacist may seem slightly different, the education and training required to get to such positions is generally speaking the same. In the United States, both a doctor of pharmacy degree and a license qualification must be received in all of the pharmacists to provide prescriptions and medical advice to patients. The clinical sense having a licence qualification is also helpful, as it allows clinical pharmacists to carry out some of the work the doctors may have too.

The specific knowledge that clinical pharmacists have is also built up during a degree course and training. This is gained over several years of studying, often around other subjects such as physics and chemistry, in order to gain both a broad general knowledge of medical science, and the specific knowledge of medical pharmacy.
